Digital Audio Tape (DAT)
- Is a standard medium and technology for the digital recording of audio on tape
- Most DAT drives can record at sample rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz
- A DAT cartridge is slightly larger than a credit card in width and height and contains a magnetic tape that can hold from 2 to 24 gigabytes of data. It can support data transfer rates of about 2 MBps. Like other types of tapes, DATs are sequential-access media.

Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
- Is a computer that is specially equipped with a high-quality sound card and programming for editing and processing digital audio.
- Digital audio workstations can range from a simple two-channel editor to a complete digital recording studio suite.

Analogue to Digital
Analogue vs Digital
- Analogue Sound Source – Voice, ambient sounds, instruments etc.
- Analogue to Digital Conversion (ADC) – Soundcard
Analogue vs Digital
- Analogue Audio = True representation of original sound
- Digital Audio = Digital representation of analogue audio
Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI):
- MIDI is a standard adopted by the electronic music industry for controlling devices, such as synthesizers and sound cards, that emit music.
- The MIDI standard is supported by most synthesizers, so sounds created on one synthesizer can be played and manipulated on another synthesizer.
- At minimum, a MIDI representation of a sound includes values for the note's pitch, length, and volume. It can also include additional characteristics, such as attack and delay time.
- Using a MIDI controller keyboard not only increases your workflow, but allows you to get more creative with your software.
- MIDI keyboards can be used for a variety of functions including performance, composition and even as a master control surface
- Computers that have a MIDI interface can record sounds created by a synthesizer and then manipulate the data to produce new sounds
- MIDI keyboard is a musical instrument like a piano keyboard. The MIDI portion indicates that the instrument has a communication protocol built in that allows it to communicate with a computer or other MIDI-equipped instrument.
Multitrack Recording:
- Multi-track systems are methods of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources to create a cohesive whole.
- Multitracking became possible with the idea of simultaneously recording different audio channels to separate discrete tracks on the same tape - a track was simply a different channel recorded to its own discrete area on tape whereby their relative sequence of recorded events would be preserved, and playback would be simultaneous or synchronized.
